Climbing Together: Strengthening Friendships and Love
Building
and maintaining strong relationships is essential to living a fulfilling life.
Whether it is a friendship or romantic partnership, relationships take effort,
patience, and commitment to thrive. Just as you would put in the work to run
that 5k trail; nurturing the bonds with those closest to you requires
attention, care, and intentionality.
According
to a study from the American Psychological Association, positive relationships
are linked to improved health, increased happiness, and even longer lifespans.
People who have strong social connections are 50% more likely to live longer
than those with fewer close relationships. Additionally, they experience lower
levels of stress, which can have a significant impact on mental and physical
well-being. So, grab your besties and enjoy a day on the water or hiking in the
mountains.
As
you climb together, you’ll find that the hardest parts make the summit feel
even more meaningful. Research from the Gottman Institute highlights that successful
partnerships are built on communication, mutual respect, and emotional support.
My partner and I have been together for 13 years. We have had plenty of fights.
Those explosive moments taught us how we did not want to talk to each other. To
gain back the trust and respect of our relationship, it meant reaching a
resolution or delivering an authentic apology. We laugh at the
biggest and most memorable fights we have had. The ‘cup fight’ and the ‘Guess
Who?’ fight. Couples who can navigate difficult conversations and challenges
with patience are more likely to experience long-term happiness and
satisfaction. It’s not about avoiding conflict, but about how you handle it
together.
Similarly,
friendships benefit from consistent effort. Nurture your connections, help each
other overcome obstacles, and remember that every step forward is a victory. A
study from the University of Oxford found that friends can act as a
source of resilience, helping individuals cope with life’s difficulties. When
friends actively listen, provide emotional support, and share experiences, it
fosters a deeper, more meaningful connection. Like romantic relationships,
friendships thrive on trust, reliability, and shared positive experiences. I
met my best friend in elementary school. She will always be there (cue the ‘Friends’ song) for
me and I will always deliver the same level of support. She knows EVERYTHING
and I would trust her with my life. There is and will always be mutual, trust, love, and support.
Whether you’re strengthening a friendship or love, showing up consistently, being a reliable presence, and offering emotional support are key. Just as climbing a mountain requires persistence and grit, nurturing relationships requires similar commitment. My parents are my most reliable presence. I could not imagine what it would be like to struggle without their unconditional love. It is the three of us, and we are in it together. Whether it is mending broken hearts (love and physical), discovering new global locations, embracing new experiences and navigating life’s obstacles. They will always show up for me. The bond you build through time and effort can provide not only happiness but also a sense of belonging and support.
Remember,
every step forward in your relationships — whether small or large — is a
victory. Invest in your connections, and you’ll find that the rewards, from
better health to emotional fulfillment, are worth the effort.
