Embrace the Winter Wonderland: How to Stay Active and Enjoy Nature This Christmas in Colorado

Christmas in Colorado means snow-capped peaks, cozy mountain cabins, and, of course, the opportunity to embrace the beauty of winter’s outdoor adventures. #HolisticHealth Whether you’re spending the holidays with family, friends, or taking some time for self-reflection, getting outside and staying active is one of the best ways to soak in the holiday spirit.

Colorado offers countless outdoor activities for all ages and levels, making it the perfect destination to celebrate the holidays while staying healthy and active. So, grab your snow boots, bundle up, and discover how you can enjoy nature and keep moving during Christmas in the Centennial State.

1. Traditional Fun Playing in the snow is one of the greatest benefits of living in Colorado. It is warm enough to be outside playing in the snow. The winter weather here is not bitter, like you will find on the coast and in humid states, like Minnesota. I went skiing on a -40° day. Never again.

I enjoy adding food coloring to the snow. It will make your snow people, forts, and snowballs vivid, adding some extra fun to the experience. I would recommend black, dark, or old gloves (just in case).

2. Ice Skating in Downtown Denver For those looking for a fun and festive activity, ice skating in downtown Denver’s Skyline Park or the outdoor rink at the World Arena Ice Centre in Colorado Springs provides the perfect Christmas-day experience. Glide under twinkling lights as you share the rink with friends or family. It’s a nostalgic way to bond, burn off some Christmas calories, and create memories on the ice!

3. Snowshoeing or Cross-Country Skiing in the Rockies One of the most serene ways to explore Colorado’s winter wonderland is on a pair of snowshoes. This peaceful activity is easy for beginners and offers a great full-body workout as you trek through snow-covered trails. From the national forests near Boulder to the stunning Rocky Mountain National Park, there are endless snowshoeing opportunities. Pack a couple of beers, and a lot of water to sip on as you take in the crisp air, celebrate your physical accomplishment, and enjoy the breathtaking views.

4. Skiing and Snowboarding in Colorado’s World-Class Resorts If you're lucky enough to be in the mountains during Christmas, don’t miss out on the state’s famous skiing and snowboarding resorts. Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, and Steamboat Springs are all top destinations offering excellent slopes for both seasoned experts and beginners. Skiing and snowboarding in Colorado’s majestic mountains is truly an experience that captures the essence of the season.

I LOVE skiing Monarch Mountain. It is more off the tourist track, if that is more of what you are looking for in a fun day on the slopes. As for the large resorts and ski communities, I would choose Copper and Winter Park above all others. The terrain is spacious and offers a variety. It doesn't feel crowded like Breckenridge. Winter Park is home to the The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) is one of the largest outdoor therapeutic recreation and adaptive sports agencies in the world. What a special opportunity and ski resort.

Like any resort, get there early for good parking.

5. Winter Hiking or Camping in Colorado’s National Parks For a less intense but still invigorating activity, try winter hiking in Colorado’s national parks and wildlife areas. For those who want to truly disconnect and experience the season in a unique way, winter camping in Colorado offers a quiet, beautiful retreat. While some trails may be more challenging during the winter months, others are perfect for an easy winter walk. The frozen landscapes offer a new perspective of the wilderness, and with fewer crowds, it feels like you have nature all to yourself. Many campgrounds in the state remain open throughout the winter, and with proper preparation, it is a peaceful way to embrace the cold and enjoy the quiet beauty of snow-covered forests. A visit to places like the Garden of the Gods or the Great Sand Dunes National Park will reward you with a peaceful yet exhilarating Christmas day adventure.

This Christmas, make the most of the natural beauty around you. Whether you’re snowshoeing through a forest, skiing down a mountain, or enjoying a peaceful winter hike, Colorado’s outdoor spaces offer a multitude of opportunities to stay active and embrace the season. Don’t let the cold weather hold you back—get outside and create memories that will last a lifetime. After all, nothing says "Colorado Christmas" like spending the day in the snow-filled outdoors with your loved ones.

Happy holidays from Colorado’s winter wonderland!
